Owner Biographies

Charles Himes, President & CEO, Waste-Away Group, Ltd.

Chuck has seen vast change in the waste industry throughout his 49 years at the company. He has helped guide the operation’s success into becoming one of the largest waste and recycling management companies in Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan. This 70 year old, family-owned business has a service history longer than any other waste and recycling company in the area. One thing has remained constant at the Waste-Away Group, a business culture of providing innovative solutions to customers. Currently, his focus as President and CEO, is long-term, strategic planning with the third generation owners. He is a University of Indiana graduate and he has obtained education certificates in numerous industry related subjects. Chuck was inducted to the National Solid Waste Management Association Indiana Chapter Hall of Fame. He serves as the industry’s representative on the State of Indiana Solid Waste Management Board. Chuck is an integral part of concentrating on the company’s future smart growth and technological advances.

Stephen Himes, Vice President, Waste-Away Group, Ltd.

Steve Himes shares the “second generation” ownership of the family owned businesses with his brother Charles. He has been active in the daily operation of the businesses since 1964 and has had responsibility for various business functions. Most of Steve’s daily activities revolve around the “human” aspect of the companies in such areas as employment relations, fleet and medical insurance policies, acquisitions and governmental compliance issues. Steve graduated from Goshen College and is active in community affairs such as the Elkhart County 4-H Fair, Elkhart County Solid Waste Advisory Board and the Elkhart County Soil & Water Conservation District.

Steve is married and has one adult son.

Charles Himes III, President, Mechanic, Ltd.

Charlie has been working with the company since 1983. He started as an equipment operator at the landfill and later pursued his Business degree at Metropolitan State College in Denver, CO, in 1991. He returned to the Waste-Away Group to learn and grow the maintenance operations. As President of Mechanic Inc., the company’s maintenance division, he oversees the fleet condition, compactor repair, equipment fabrication, container inventory, equipment specifications, container delivery and purchasing. He is also a board member for the Detachable Container Association. Throughout his years of experience with various customers, Charlie has never met a customer that he cannot satisfy. His fabrication division will customize equipment for any application. Charlie actively works with the sales force and with customers to offer a fully-integrated approach to service. His creativity shows throughout the community with specialized waste equipment systems. His commitment to the customers is a 24/7 approach that makes his department stand out from the competition

Christopher Himes, President, Recycling Works, Inc.

Chris originally began in the recycling division of the Waste-Away Group in 1992 and he has spent the majority of his time in this division. Early on, Chris provided service as a driver and in various operations roles of the company. He is an Indiana University graduate and he also brings driver management experience to the company. Today, he is President of Recycling Works, Inc, the recycling division. He manages all recycling processing as well as Integra, the document destruction division. Chris oversaw the planning and the construction for the new Waste-Away single stream recycling facility that opened in July 2009. This facility is one-of-a-kind in the Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan area and is one of only 200 like operations in the country. He works with new and existing end markets and is always investigating alternative recycling opportunities. Chris has been on the forefront of change in the recycling division and he looks forward to adding new recycling opportunities for customers.

Kenneth Himes, Chief Operating Officer, Waste-Away Group, Ltd.

In 1990, Ken Himes began as a rolloff driver and he always provided top-notch service to his customers. This is the same outlook that Ken instills in all of the Waste-Away employees. He is an Indiana University graduate and also brings a strong background to the company in Public and Environmental affairs, as well as, technology and network design. Today, Ken is the COO and he is responsible for the overall operation of Waste-Away Group and its affiliates. As an active member of the National Solid Waste Management Association, Indiana Solid Waste Management Association, the Indiana Business Alliance, and the Independent Haulers Network, he is always seeking best practices in the industry. Ken is very active with his customers and he is committed to going the extra mile. Ken has been instrumental in carrying on the consistent reputation of the Waste-Away Group and increasing the customer base.
